A Special Guest Lecture: Cory Doctorow
Winter 2024
Vol. 28, No. 2
Dear Students, Alumni, and Friends:
Welcome back to The Source! As we look back on the past year, 2023-24, we congratulate our students and alumni for their outstanding work, in a year when they demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of challenges and changes.
Amidst industry shifts, the Canadian cultural sector demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of substantial challenges, such as the slowdown in Foreign Location Service Production caused by protracted strikes from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA. Despite these obstacles, our community has shown responsive adaptability, highlighting our strength and versatility.
A significant focus during negotiations was the future impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on screen trades like acting and screenwriting. This underscores AI's dual role as an innovator and disruptor in the creative sector. Notable advancements, such as text-to-video capabilities in platforms like Sora, have the potential to revolutionize filmmaking. However, these innovations also bring about pressing concerns and legal challenges regarding intellectual property and data governance, prompting us to rethink traditional approaches across journalism, publishing, music, theatre, broadcasting, arts, and screen industries.
As always, we take great pride in the achievements of our soon-to-be graduates and recent alumni. Your successes are a testament to the excellence and dedication found within our program. We encourage you to engage with us by sharing your experiences, projects, and endeavors with our community. Your work and insights play a crucial role in shaping the future of the Arts, Media, and Entertainment program.
We eagerly anticipate your participation in our upcoming events and invite you to keep us informed about your endeavors.
Warm regards,
Trina and Ken
